HYPNOTHERAPY – WHAT IS IT?

Hypnotherapy is a treatment that uses relaxation to access your sub-conscious mind and retrain your thinking processes.
It should not be confused with stage hypnosis which puts people into a trance state and takes away their power of choice; with hypnotherapy the patient is always aware of what is being said and can choose to end the session anytime they wish.  You will not blurt out private or confidential information unless you wish to disclose it.  You won’t accept any suggestions that do not fit into your own moral and personal values.  Patients often describe the experience as being like when you are engrossed in a film or book to the extent that you don’t notice your surroundings but are fully awake.

WHAT CAN IT HELP?
It may be helpful in cases where the patient needs to think about a problem in a different way, for example to overcome habitual behaviour such as smoking, drinking, nail biting, weight problems and gambling.  It is important to understand that you will only give up if you really want to – not because someone else thinks you should.

Hypno gastric band for weight control is a course of 3 or 4 sessions in which you get help in changing your attitude toward food followed by a final session where you listen to a recording of the operating theatre where a real gastric band operation is done.   This is done while you are under hypnosis so leaves you with the subconscious impression that you have had a gastric band fitted, leaving you with an improved sensation of fullness after you have eaten and reducing the temptation to over-eat.

Hypno birthing to reduce labour pain is a course of treatment that prepares you for the birth of your baby.

Hypnotherapy may also be effective to find the root of a problem which may be causing psychological disturbances and can be used to help panic attacks, sleep disturbance, academic and athletic performance, pain management (e.g. dentistry, general aches and pains, migraines and headaches), irritable bowel syndrome and relaxation during pregnancy.
Hypnotherapy may also help with Phobias such as agoraphobia, claustrophobia, fear of flying, spiders and birds, to name but a few.
